Reversible air-to-air heat pump: heating and cooling all year round

What if a single piece of equipment could heat your home in winter and cool it in summer? That is exactly the promise of the reversible air-to-air heat pump, which has become one of the most sought-after solutions for improving a home's comfort while keeping consumption under control.
How does it work?
An air-to-air heat pump captures the heat present in the outdoor air and transfers it inside to provide heating. In summer, the cycle reverses: it extracts heat from the home and releases it outside. The same appliance therefore performs two functions, with no additional radiator or boiler.
Its main strength: for every 1 kWh of electricity consumed, a good heat pump delivers 3 to 4 kWh of heat. This is what is known as the coefficient of performance (COP).

What are the concrete benefits?
- Two uses in one: high-performance heating and air conditioning, with a single investment.
- Real savings: by replacing electric convector heaters, the heating bill can drop significantly.
- Consistent comfort: multisplit models deliver a stable temperature room by room.
- Quick installation: no major works, unlike an air-to-water heat pump connected to a radiator circuit.
note
The air-to-air heat pump does not produce domestic hot water. For an all-electric home, it is often combined with a thermodynamic water heater.
Financial grants in 2026
Support schemes change every year. Depending on your situation, a reduced VAT rate or certain grants may apply, provided you call on a qualified installer. Before any commitment, we check your eligibility and the appliance's refrigerant — a crucial point given the evolving F-Gas regulation.
Maintenance and lifespan
Like any thermodynamic system, an air-to-air heat pump must be serviced regularly. Beyond comfort, it is a legal obligation for the systems concerned. Regular maintenance guarantees efficiency and extends the equipment's lifespan, which often exceeds 15 years.
Is it right for you?
The reversible air-to-air heat pump suits the majority of homes, both in renovation and new-build projects. Correct sizing and installation quality make all the difference.
