Choosing the right air conditioner in 2026: the complete guide

Choosing an air conditioner is not just about comparing prices. Capacity, type of installation, energy performance, noise level: every criterion matters if you want lasting comfort without blowing up your energy bill. Here is our method, tried and tested on hundreds of projects.
Monosplit or multisplit?
A monosplit pairs an outdoor unit with a single indoor unit. It is the ideal solution for cooling a living room or a bedroom. A multisplit, on the other hand, connects several indoor units to a single outdoor unit: perfect for cooling an entire home while keeping the number of modules on the façade to a minimum.
In both renovation and new-build projects, the choice mainly depends on the number of rooms to be treated and on any co-ownership constraints. If you are unsure, our technicians carry out a free on-site assessment: request your quote.
Sizing the capacity correctly
An oversized air conditioner consumes too much and wears out prematurely; an undersized one runs constantly without ever reaching the set temperature. On average, you should count between 100 and 130 cooling watts per square metre, to be adjusted according to insulation, sun exposure and ceiling height.

The performance criteria to check
- SEER and SCOP: these indices measure seasonal efficiency in cooling and heating mode. The higher they are, the less the appliance consumes.
- The energy class: choose at least a class A, ideally A+++.
- The noise level: for a bedroom, aim for an indoor unit around 19 to 25 dB(A).
- The refrigerant: in 2026, R32 remains the standard, but anticipate the transition towards refrigerants with a very low climate impact.
tip
A reversible model heats in winter and cools in summer. It often offers the best comfort-to-investment ratio: read our article on the reversible air-to-air heat pump.
Reduced VAT and grants
For a reversible air-to-air heat pump installed by a qualified professional, a reduced VAT rate may apply to certain services. Be careful: the rules change and not all equipment is eligible. We review the situation with you before every quote.
Do not overlook the installation
The best air conditioner, poorly installed, loses performance and breaks down more often. Refrigerant-circuit sealing, vacuum pull-down, positioning of the outdoor unit: the quality of the installation determines the appliance's lifespan. Calling in a professional who handles refrigerants is also a regulatory requirement.
Once installed, remember the regular maintenance of your air conditioning, which is in fact governed by law.
