Air conditioning recharge in 2026: pricing, F-Gas regulation and what to know before the refrigeration technician's visit

Your air conditioning blows lukewarm air in the middle of a heatwave, the outdoor unit is icing up abnormally, or your electricity bill has jumped 25% since the start of summer: there is a good chance your installation has lost refrigerant — the "cold blood" that circulates in the circuit of your air conditioner or reversible heat pump. Yet air conditioning recharge is today a subject that is as regulated as it is unknown to households: between the growing scarcity of R-32 and R-410A, the new traceability requirements imposed by regulation (EU) 2024/573 F-Gas, and the price surge of virgin refrigerants (sometimes multiplied by three since 2022), a poorly prepared intervention can cost two to four times more than necessary, or even earn you a 1,500 € fine if carried out by a non-professional. Why an air conditioner loses refrigerant
A hermetic circuit... in theory only
The refrigeration circuit of a reversible air conditioner is a closed and leak-tight system: it is charged at the factory for a lifetime of 15 to 20 years, without any particular intervention. But in practice, more than one installation in ten has a micro-leak in the first 5 years of operation, mainly due to:
- Vibrations from the outdoor unit (compressor) that eventually loosen the flare fittings,
- Corrosion of the copper refrigeration lines, especially by the sea or in industrial environments,
- Micro-shocks (storm, hail, vandalism) that damage the outdoor heat exchanger,
- Original crimping defect, detected several months after commissioning.

A refrigerant loss of 5 to 10% per year is considered abnormal by ADEME and requires a mandatory leak search before any recharge, in accordance with article 5 of regulation (EU) 2024/573.
Warning signs
Even before pulling out the pressure gauge, several clues help detect an undercharge in refrigerant:

Switch off the air conditioning immediately in the event of persistent icing: running a compressor dry can burn out the motor in less than 20 minutes and turn a 250 € recharge into a 1,800 € outdoor unit replacement.
How much does a recharge cost in 2026: the real prices
Ranges observed in Île-de-France
The prices charged in 2026 for an air conditioning recharge vary from one to fourfold depending on the refrigerant, the quantity, the context and the chosen professional. Here are the realistic ranges observed by Proclimo on more than 1,200 interventions in Île-de-France since January 2025:

The price of refrigerant: the variable that is soaring
The purchase price of R-32 for professionals has almost tripled between January 2022 and July 2026, going from 35 €/kg to about 95 €/kg. R-410A follows the same trajectory with an extra cost of +180% over the same period, reaching 150 to 180 €/kg in July 2026 — a level that makes recharges on older installations less and less profitable.

The scarcity of new R-410A is such that French wholesalers (Fraikin, Climalife, Gazprom Energy) have set up monthly quotas since the 1st quarter of 2026, billed at +3 € per tonne of CO₂ equivalent under the European F-Gas contribution.
The trap of "80 € recharges"
An offer to recharge for less than 80 € incl. VAT should immediately raise a red flag: in 9 out of 10 cases, it is untraced refrigerant, sometimes mixed with nitrogen or with recovered refrigerant without complying with ARI 700 standards (purity, humidity, residues). Consequences:
- COP degraded by 15 to 25%, i.e. a proportional electrical overconsumption,
- Acidity of the mixture that attacks the copper piping in 2 to 5 years,
- Risk of compressor failure due to liquid slugging,
- Cancellation of the manufacturer's warranty and home insurance in the event of a claim.
The 2026 F-Gas regulation: what really changed
Regulation (EU) 2024/573, applicable since March 2024
The overhaul of the F-Gas regulation, adopted on 7 February 2024 and published in the OJEU on 20 February 2024, entered into force on 11 March 2024. It introduces three structuring measures for air conditioning recharge in 2026:
- Strengthened traceability: each kilogram of refrigerant must be traced from the producer to the end user via the European F-Gas register.
- Reinforced leak-tightness check: doubled frequency for installations of 30 to 300 kg of CO₂ equivalent (every 6 months instead of 12), and quarterly beyond 300 kg.
- Reduced HFC quotas: the reduction coefficient applied to the quantity of virgin HFCs placed on the market goes from 55% to 43% in 2026, then to 31% in 2027, making new R-410A almost impossible to find by the end of 2027.

France strengthens control with the order of 21 November 2025
The new order of 21 November 2025 transposes into French law the categories of capacity certificate redefined by the European Union (A1, A2, B, C, D, E, V) and enters into force on 1 January 2027. For households, this means that:
- A1: intervention without charge limit (which Proclimo holds),
- A2: intervention limited to 3 kg of refrigerant (standard mono-splits),
- B: intervention in all charge categories for non-refrigeration personnel (general maintenance technicians).

Systematically ask your refrigeration technician for a copy of their capacity certificate before any intervention. In the event of a claim, your home insurance may refuse to compensate you if the operator was not certified.
Recharge vs replacement: how to decide
The 30% rule
Proclimo has applied since 2018 a proven rule of thumb: if the cost of the recharge exceeds 30% of the cost of a replacement of the outdoor unit, it is better to replace. In concrete terms:

When recharge is technically impossible
Some situations prohibit recharging and require replacement:
- Burnt-out compressor (following prolonged dry running),
- Outdoor heat exchanger pierced or corroded over more than 15% of its surface,
- Unlocalizable leak after 3 successive searches (rare cases, < 2%),
- Prohibited refrigerant by regulation (e.g. R-22, banned since 2015, still present in some old heat pumps).
The role of reclaimed refrigerant: a sustainable solution
What is a reclaimed refrigerant?
Reclaimed refrigerant is a used refrigerant that has been collected, cleaned, analysed and restored to original specifications by an approved installer (Climalife, Friaxa, Refrigerant Services). Unlike recycled refrigerant (simply filtered), reclaimed refrigerant is traceable, laboratory tested and compliant with ARI 700 standards on all criteria (purity, humidity < 10 ppm, residuals < 0.01%).
A growing regulatory obligation
Regulation (EU) 2024/573 makes reclaimed refrigerant a strategic priority:
- No quota for reclaimed refrigerant (unlike new),
- Guaranteed availability for maintenance operations after 2027,
- Cost 30 to 50% lower compared to the equivalent virgin refrigerant,
- Carbon footprint divided by 5 compared to the production of new refrigerant.

Since 1 January 2026, Proclimo systematically uses reclaimed refrigerant for R-32 and R-410A recharges, unless specifically requested by the customer. Reclaimed refrigerant is traced, certified and billed 20 to 40 € cheaper per kg than the equivalent virgin refrigerant.
The right reflexes before the intervention: the Proclimo checklist
On the household side
- Check the warranty of your installation: the manufacturer's warranty generally covers the recharge if the installation is less than 5 years old and if the annual maintenance is up to date.
- Photograph the outdoor unit and the electricity meter before the intervention, in case of subsequent dispute.
- Request a quote with exact mass of refrigerant (in grams), type of refrigerant, price per kg and breakdown of labour / travel / refrigerant.
- Require the CERFA sheet n° 15497*03: without it, the intervention has no legal value.
- Keep the intervention report for at least 5 years (ADEME obligation).
On the professional / tertiary side
For offices, shops, hotels and co-ownerships, the recharge must be integrated into the annual maintenance contract (see mandatory air conditioning maintenance 2026 and air conditioning maintenance in co-ownership). - The mass of refrigerant added per quarter (in kg),
- The frequency of leaks detected per installation,
- The annual leak rate (in grams per year),
- The type of refrigerant used (virgin, reclaimed, recycled),
- The dated and signed leak-tightness check report.
A concrete case: a summer repair in Boulogne-Billancourt (92)
