Reversible air-to-air heat pump mounted on the wall of a home

End of "single-measure" subsidies on 1 September 2026: what changes for reversible air conditioning

From 1 September 2026, the so-called "single-measure" renovation subsidies are disappearing: loft insulation, window replacement, wood stoves… and reversible air conditioning installed on its own will no longer be individually eligible for funding under MaPrimeRénov'. For a homeowner looking to fit an air-to-air heat pump, this deadline is a game changer. Here's what we know, which subsidies remain, and how to prepare your project with peace of mind.

What the 1 September 2026 reform changes

Since it reopened on 23 February 2026, the MaPrimeRénov' scheme has been allocated a budget of 3.6 billion euros, against a backdrop of tight budget constraints. To refocus support on the most effective projects, the government has decided to end funding for isolated measures.

In practical terms, from 1 September 2026:

  • "Per-measure" renovations (a single type of work) are no longer subsidised by MaPrimeRénov' for several categories, including reversible air conditioning.
  • Only large-scale renovations — several types of work combined — remain eligible, provided they deliver a gain of at least two classes on the energy performance certificate (DPE).
  • The highest subsidies (several tens of thousands of euros) are reserved for these whole-home renovations.

Let's recall one essential point: the air-to-air heat pump (reversible air conditioning) was never eligible for MaPrimeRénov' on a per-measure basis in 2026. The reform confirms this logic and extends it to other types of work. For a standalone air conditioning project, the focus therefore shifts to the other schemes.

What remains to finance a reversible air conditioner

Good news: fitting your home with reversible air conditioning is still supported, but through levers other than MaPrimeRénov'.

The CEE bonus, the main support for standalone AC

Energy Savings Certificates (CEE), funded by energy suppliers, remain the main route to public funding for a standalone air-to-air heat pump. In 2026, the bonus can reach several hundred euros depending on your income, your geographic area and the performance of the equipment (a high coefficient of performance is required).

To qualify, a few standard conditions apply: a home more than two years old, installation by a qualified RGE installer, and above all a claim filed before work begins. This order is imperative: signing a quote and then claiming the bonus afterwards will disqualify you.

The reduced VAT rate

Installing reversible air conditioning in a home more than two years old benefits from a reduced VAT rate on labour, compared with the usual 20% — again on condition that you use an RGE professional. And going further, the "Endurance" plan provides for a reduction of VAT to 5.5% on high-performance reversible air-to-air heat pumps: we cover this scheme in detail in our article on 5.5% VAT on reversible air conditioning.

warning

Don't confuse the schemes. The end of "single-measure" subsidies concerns MaPrimeRénov'. It does not affect the "Coup de pouce chauffage" bonus, which is reserved for approved air/water heat pumps that replace a fossil-fuel boiler — a different scenario from reversible air conditioning.

The new mandatory France Rénov' appointment

Another 2026 change to be aware of: for a large-scale renovation, a preliminary appointment with a France Rénov' adviser is now mandatory before submitting a MaPrimeRénov' application. Free and available at France Rénov' offices across the country, it aims to secure projects and avoid ineffective work. If your air conditioning is part of an overall project (insulation + heating + ventilation), remember to factor this step into your schedule.

Should you rush before 1 September?

The temptation to "grab" the last subsidies before the deadline is strong. Our advice: plan ahead, yes; rush, no. A successful air conditioning project rests first and foremost on proper sizing and suitable equipment, not on chasing a bonus.

  • Get a quote drawn up now and file your CEE bonus claim before starting the work.
  • Choose high-performance equipment: our guide to choosing the right air conditioner in 2026 remains the best starting point, and our article on the reversible air-to-air heat pump explains how it works.
  • Check your installer's RGE qualification, a condition for accessing most subsidies and reduced rates.

tip

Even before investing in an active system, passive solutions (shutters, blinds, night-time ventilation) and well-maintained ventilation already significantly reduce summer overheating. And once the AC is installed, setting it up properly makes all the difference to your bill.

A lasting investment for your home

Beyond the subsidies, high-performance reversible air conditioning adds value to your property: a home that stays cool in summer and is energy-efficient stands out at resale, as we explain in our article on the DPE and property value. High-performance equipment is also maintained equipment: remember that the maintenance of these systems is regulated by law, a guarantee of performance and longevity.

Frequently asked questions

Was reversible air conditioning eligible for MaPrimeRénov' before September 2026? No. As a standalone installation, the air-to-air heat pump was not eligible for MaPrimeRénov' on a per-measure basis in 2026. The reform ends single-measure funding for other types of work (loft insulation, windows, wood stoves…).

Which subsidies are still available for standalone AC? Mainly the CEE bonus, the reduced VAT rate (with an RGE installer), and eventually the 5.5% VAT from the "Endurance" plan for high-performance equipment.

Is the France Rénov' appointment mandatory for everyone? It is mandatory for large-scale renovations before submitting a MaPrimeRénov' application. For a simple CEE bonus on standalone air conditioning, it does not apply.

Should the subsidy claim be filed before or after the work? Always before. Filing your CEE claim after signing the quote or starting the work forfeits your right to the bonus.
