Becoming an HVAC/refrigeration technician in 2026: training, diplomas, salary and career prospects
The Proclimo Team
24 Jul 2026 - 13 min read
France has about 30,000 to 35,000 HVAC/refrigeration technicians in practice for an estimated annual recruitment need of between 5,000 and 10,000 positions — the HVAC sector (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) is one of the most understaffed in the country, ahead of electricians and roofers. With the government's objective of 6 million heat pumps installed by 2030, the end of oil-fired boilers, the 2026 reform of F-Gas certifications and the mandatory RGE qualification for all installers since 1 January 2026, the HVAC/refrigeration technician trade has become one of the most solid in the building trades — in terms of salary, prospects and job security. Here is the complete Proclimo guide to understanding the training, choosing the right diploma, landing a first job and building a lasting career in refrigeration and air conditioning.
Why become an HVAC technician in 2026?
A structurally understaffed market
The shortage of HVAC technicians in France is not a passing trend. It is fuelled by three converging dynamics:
- The energy transition wall: the RE2020 environmental regulation requires the phase-out of fossil fuel boilers and the massive deployment of air-to-air and air-to-water heat pumps. The pace of 1 million heat pumps per year by 2027 (France Nation Verte target) cannot be met without doubling the workforce in the sector.
- Retirements: one third of HVAC technicians in practice will retire by 2030. The cohorts trained over the last five years only partially offset this flow.
- Rising qualification requirements: the F-Gas certification reform (categories A1 A2 B C D E, 7-year validity, mandatory refresher training), the 2026 RGE reform (documentary audit, job reference, Qualibat control), and the F-Gaz regulation on R-32 and R-290 have raised the level of requirement. Untrained profiles can no longer work legally.
The result: about 15,000 positions are currently vacant, and companies offer hiring bonuses of €1,500 to €5,000 to attract qualified candidates.
A well-paid trade, from the very beginning
Contrary to popular belief, the HVAC technician is not a "small" building trade. The 2026 salary grids, derived from BTP collective agreements and INRS data, position it above the French minimum wage from the first year and well above the French median salary after five years of experience.
| Level of experience | Gross monthly salary | Estimated net monthly salary |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner (work-study) | €1,800 to €2,300 | €1,450 to €1,800 |
| Confirmed (3 to 7 years) | €2,400 to €3,100 | €1,900 to €2,450 |
| Versatile / referent | €3,000 to €3,900 | €2,400 to €3,100 |
| Team leader | €3,400 to €4,500 | €2,700 to €3,550 |
| Industrial refrigeration technician | €3,500 to €5,000 | €2,800 to €3,950 |
| Self-employed / craftsman | €3,000 to €6,000 | €2,400 to €4,800 (before tax) |
These salaries are frequently topped up with on-call bonuses (€200 to €600 gross per week) and meal allowances (€10 to €15 per day), which can increase annual income by €6,000 to €15,000 gross. For a self-employed HVAC technician running their own business, earnings can reach €50,000 to €100,000 net/year, which places the trade in the top 5 best-paid BTP jobs alongside plumber-heating engineer and specialised electrician.
info
On-call bonuses explain a large part of the trade's attractiveness: HVAC technicians handle emergency call-outs, including weekends and nights, especially on tertiary installations (supermarket cold rooms, office air conditioning, data centres). This is what allows a confirmed technician to earn €4,000 to €5,000 gross per month by combining base salary and on-call duty.
What does an HVAC technician do on a daily basis?
The term "HVAC/refrigeration technician" actually covers several complementary trades, all centred on thermodynamic systems (production of cooling or heating by heat transfer):
- The installer fits new equipment: splits, multi-splits, air-to-air heat pumps, air-to-water heat pumps, ducted units, cassettes, mono-splits on rooftops. They run refrigerant lines, pull a vacuum, charge the refrigerant, commission the system and train the user.
- The maintenance technician carries out the mandatory annual maintenance: cleaning filters and the heat exchanger, leak check, pressure verification, charge reading, electrical check. It is the most stable part of the profession, with a recurring client portfolio.
- The repair technician intervenes in emergency breakdowns: diagnosis, leak search, compressor or electronic board replacement, refrigerant recharging. It is the best-paid job, but also the most stressful.
- The industrial refrigeration technician works on large-scale installations: commercial refrigeration (supermarket cold rooms, display cases), industrial refrigeration (cold stores, slaughterhouses, dairies), agri-food process.
At Proclimo, in Île-de-France, we mainly work on the first two profiles: air conditioning installation for individuals, property managers and businesses, and maintenance-repair on the existing fleet. It is varied, technical work that combines rooftop installation, vacuum pulling in attics, refrigerant charging on site, and customer relations.
Which diploma to become an HVAC technician?
There are several routes, from CAP to Bac+3, accessible depending on your starting level. All are eligible for work-study programmes, which is the recommended route to learn the trade while being paid.
CAP / Professional title level (without the baccalauréat)
CAP Installateur en Froid et Conditionnement d'Air (2 years after Year 9) — RNCP code 38309. This is the classic entry route into the trade. Curriculum: reading plans, brazing and soldering refrigerant lines, commissioning, basic maintenance. Training in a vocational high school or CFA (apprentice training centre), 100 % work-study possible.
CAP Monteur en Installations Thermiques (2 years) — complementary option focused on heating and domestic hot water production. Ideal for profiles who want to work on air-to-water heat pumps (heating + reversible air conditioning).
Titre professionnel Monteur Dépanneur Frigoriste (level 3, RNCP 35306) — accessible in 6 to 12 months without the baccalauréat. Issued by the Ministry of Labour, prepared at AFPA, in Greta, or in a private centre. Indicative price: €14,815 in a centre, funded in work-study mode. 2025 success rate: 82.40 %; employment access rate: 74.20 %.
Bac level (Bac Pro or BP)
Bac Pro Technicien du Froid et du Conditionnement d'Air (TFC) (3 years after Year 9) — the reference training. Covers installation, maintenance, repair, with a significant volume of practical work. Work placements: 22 weeks over the 3 years.
Bac Pro Maintenance des Systèmes Énergétiques et Climatiques (MSEC) — more focused on the maintenance of boiler rooms and complex systems.
BP Installateur Dépanneur en Froid et Conditionnement d'Air (1 year after a CAP) — level 4 diploma (equivalent to baccalauréat), offered in particular by the Compagnons du Tour de France (Orléans federation). RNCP code 38635, expiry 31-12-2028. 420 to 840 hours depending on positioning, work-study 25 % centre / 75 % company.
Bac+2 level (BTS / BUT)
BTS Fluides, Énergies, Domotique (FED) option Froid et Conditionnement d'Air (2 years after the baccalauréat) — the reference technical training for positions of responsibility. Covers installation sizing, regulation, energy performance, team management. The BTS FED also opens the door to engineering schools (ENSAM, INSA, Polytech) via parallel admissions.
BTS Maintenance des Systèmes option Systèmes Énergétiques et Fluidiques — for profiles oriented towards industrial maintenance.
BUT Génie Thermique et Énergie (3 years after the baccalauréat, at the IUT) — university technological diploma, more general, with a strong energy and environmental dimension (RE2020, BEPOS, renewable energies).
Bac+3 level (Bachelor's degree)
Licence Professionnelle Installations Frigorifiques et de Conditionnement d'Air (1 year after a BTS or BUT) — specialised further education, often in apprenticeship. Extends the BTS FED towards positions as an HVAC design engineer, technical manager or technical sales representative at a manufacturer.
tip
For 90 % of candidates, the CAP Installateur en Froid et Conditionnement d'Air or the Titre Pro Monteur Dépanneur Frigoriste is the right entry point. These two diplomas give direct access to employment and to all mandatory certifications (F-Gas, RGE). BTS and BUT should be preferred if you are aiming for a management position quickly or for a technical specialisation.
Work-study: the royal path to learn the trade
Work-study is the most suitable training mode for the HVAC technician trade, and by far the most used by companies in the sector. Two possible contracts:
- Apprenticeship contract (16-29, up to 30 in some cases) — work-study rhythm 2 weeks in the company / 1 week in the centre (variable). Gross monthly salary in 2026: €415 to €1,471 depending on age and year of execution (from 27 % to 100 % of the minimum wage).
- Professionalisation contract (any age, ideal for career changers) — for adults changing trade. Gross salary: €665 to €1,471 depending on age and starting level. Typical duration: 6 to 12 months.
The advantages of work-study:
- Zero training costs: fully funded by the company and the OPCO (Opco 2i, Constructys, Atlas).
- Paid during training: you are paid from day one.
- Guaranteed job at the end: more than 80 % of HVAC technician apprentices are hired by their host company or a competitor at the end of their contract.
- Rapid acquisition of technical gestures: vacuum pulling, refrigerant charging, rooftop installation are learned on the job, not in a classroom.
- Professional network: your apprenticeship mentor is often your first employer.
The steps to follow to find a work-study contract:
- Prepare a CV and cover letter targeting HVAC companies in your region (Proclimo, for example, in Île-de-France).
- Target CFAs offering the desired diploma: AFPA, Compagnons du Tour de France, Greta, private centres (Cesi, Pigier, Icoges).
- Submit your application on specialised platforms: La Bonne Alternance (labonnealternance.pole-emploi.fr), AFTRAL, Walt Community.
- Apply directly to companies: HVAC technicians recruit all year round, and the shortage plays in favour of motivated candidates.
Mandatory certifications to practise
Unlike other BTP trades, the HVAC technician must obtain several certifications before being able to work alone on an installation. These are legal requirements, checked by insurers, customers and control bodies.
1. The F-Gas aptitude certification (category A1 by default)
This is the authorisation to handle refrigerants (R-32, R-410A, R-290 propane, CO₂ R-744). Issued by a COFRAC-accredited certification body, after theoretical and practical training. Since the reform of the orders of 21 November 2025 (Official Journal 6 and 10 December 2025), the former categories I, II, III, IV have been replaced by categories A1, A2, B, C, D, E, with a validity of 7 years and a mandatory refresher training in a Qualiopi organisation.
For an HVAC technician who installs and services heat pumps and split air conditioners, it is the A1 category that is required. The refresher training lasts 3h30 and costs around €250 to €400.
2. The electrical authorisation B1V / BR / BC
Any intervention on an air conditioner or heat pump requires handling electrical circuits (230 V single-phase or 400 V three-phase power supply). Electrical authorisation is issued by a certified body after 1 to 3 days of training (theory + practice). It is renewed every 3 years by a refresher course. Often included in the CAP/Bac Pro curriculum, it must be retaken for career changers.
3. The RGE qualification (QualiPAC / QualiClimat)
Since 1 January 2026, the RGE (Reconnu Garant de l'Environnement) qualification is mandatory for any installer of heat pumps, air conditioners and thermodynamic water heaters. Without RGE, the installer no longer has the right to practise — and their customers cannot benefit from public aid (MaPrimeRénov', CEE Coup de pouce premium, reduced VAT at 5.5 %, eco-PTZ).
The RGE qualification is issued by Qualibat (QualiPAC, QualiClimat) or Qualifelec, after documentary audit, control of a reference job and continuous training. Cost: €1,000 to €2,500 for 4 years, with annual audit.
4. The capacity certification (for companies)
The company that employs an HVAC technician must hold its own capacity certification (legal entity), valid for 5 years, issued by a COFRAC-accredited certification body. It must be displayed on quotes, invoices and intervention reports, in accordance with article R.543-99 of the French Environmental Code. It is a requirement and a mark of seriousness for customers.
warning
Working without an F-Gas certification, without electrical authorisation or without RGE is a penal and financial risk: in the event of an accident, the civil and criminal liability of the HVAC technician and the company is engaged, the decennial insurance does not cover, and the customer can require the dismantling of the installation. DRIEAT controls (in Île-de-France) and DREAL controls are increasingly frequent since the 2026 RGE reform.

tip
The BTS FED diploma is the most versatile for those aiming for self-employment: it covers sizing, site management, customer relations and regulation. Combined with an RGE qualification and an F-Gas A1 category aptitude certification, it opens the door to all public aid for your customers.
Qualities and skills to succeed
The HVAC technician trade requires a particular technical and human profile. Here are the qualities most sought after by employers in the sector:
- Manual ease and technical sense: vacuum pulling, refrigerant charging, brazing of lines require precision and patience. It is a trade of gesture and observation (flame colour, pressure gauge reading, compressor noise).
- Comfort with working at height: 60 % of interventions take place on rooftops or on a cherry picker. No vertigo, and impeccable safety rigging.
- Customer relations skills: an HVAC technician spends 30 to 50 % of their time at the customer's. Knowing how to explain a breakdown, present a maintenance quote, reassure about the noise of a heat pump, is just as important as the technical side.
- Physical endurance: pulling copper lines, carrying a 50 kg outdoor unit to the roof, working in attics at 35 °C in summer, is physical work. But it is also varied work: you don't sit behind a desk.
- Ability to read plans and electrical diagrams: the HVAC technician reads execution plans, refrigeration diagrams, electrical diagrams. The BTS FED trains in this reading.
- Environmental awareness: the transition to low GWP refrigerants (R-32, R-290, CO₂), reducing energy consumption, managing the noise of air conditioners are at the heart of the trade in 2026. An HVAC technician aware of these issues is more in demand.

Why Proclimo is committed to training
At Proclimo, we are directly confronted with the shortage of HVAC technicians: it takes us 4 to 6 months today to recruit a confirmed technician, despite hiring bonuses and above-market salaries. This is why we have decided to act at two levels:
- Hosting trainees and apprentices: we host 2 to 3 work-study students in CAP Installateur Froid and Bac Pro TFC every year, in partnership with the Île-de-France CFAs (CFA BTP de Saint-Denis, AFPA d'Aulnay-sous-Bois, Lycée Professionnel Claude Nicolas Ledoux d'Epinay-sur-Seine). Supervision by a certified apprenticeship mentor, training in gestures and customer relations.
- Continuous training of our teams: all our technicians are registered for the F-Gas A1 category refresher training before the 12 March 2029 deadline, and follow a yearly electrical authorisation refresher and RGE upskilling course.
- Recruiting career-changer profiles: we regularly hire adults from other BTP trades (plumbers, electricians, roofers) who want to specialise in air conditioning and heat pumps. The F-Gas training and electrical authorisation are covered by Proclimo.

Frequently asked questions
What is the salary of a beginner HVAC technician in 2026? A young CAP or Titre Pro graduate starts between €1,800 and €2,300 gross per month in Île-de-France, i.e. €1,450 to €1,800 net. This is already 20 to 30 % above the French minimum wage, and the progression is rapid: €2,400 to €3,100 after 3 to 7 years of experience.
Do you need the baccalauréat to become an HVAC technician? No. The CAP Installateur en Froid et Conditionnement d'Air (2 years after Year 9) and the Titre Pro Monteur Dépanneur Frigoriste (6 to 12 months without the baccalauréat) are the two main entry routes. The baccalauréat is only necessary if you are aiming for a BTS FED or a BUT.
Is the HVAC technician trade physically demanding? Yes, it is a BTP trade, with rooftop interventions, carrying outdoor units, pulling copper lines. But it is also a technical and intellectual trade: breakdown diagnosis, plan reading, thermal load calculation, refrigerant handling. Physical wear is moderate if you follow the safety rules and use handling aids (cherry pickers, sack trucks, hoists).
Is RGE really mandatory since 2026? Yes. Since 1 January 2026, the RGE qualification is mandatory for any installer of heat pumps, air conditioners and thermodynamic water heaters. Without RGE, you cannot legally do the installation — and your customers do not receive any public aid. This is a major change for the profession.
Is career change to the HVAC technician trade realistic? Yes, and it is one of the best career change choices in BTP in 2026. Career changers go through the Titre Pro Monteur Dépanneur Frigoriste (6 to 12 months in centre + placement) or a CAP in 1 year (1-year CAP for adults). The professionalisation contract allows you to be paid during training. Converted profiles (plumbers, electricians, military, former maintenance technicians) are highly sought after by companies.
What future for the trade with the ecological transition? The future is very favourable. The end of oil and gas boilers, the development of heat pumps, the energy renovation of buildings (RE2020, MaPrimeRénov'), the generalisation of air conditioning in offices and schools are all growth drivers. The France Nation Verte plan aims for 6 million heat pumps by 2030 — i.e. doubling the current fleet. HVAC technicians trained today will have work for the next 20 years.
